Restoring Cooling for a Radio Station Transmitter Room in Lecanto

Before

The air conditioner serving a radio station transmitter room kept tripping its breaker and shutting down. That room holds equipment that has to stay cool to keep the station on the air.

After

The Rheem packaged unit is running with a new compressor and a new condenser coil, and the transmitter room is cooling again.

The customer's situation

Some cooling calls are about comfort. This one was about keeping a business running. The customer, a radio station in Lecanto, relies on two air conditioning units to cool the room that houses its transmitting equipment. When one of those units started tripping its breaker and shutting down, the station needed answers quickly. This customer understands how important that equipment is and is very quick to call us whenever either unit at the site has an issue.

What our technician found

When our technician arrived, the breaker had tripped. He started with the electrical side of the system. The contactor, which is the switch that sends power to the compressor and outdoor fan, was reading within its normal range, so the next step was to test the compressor itself.

Using a meter, he checked the compressor windings. The readings between the start and common terminals and between the run and common terminals both showed an open circuit. That result pointed to a failed compressor. He called our service manager with the findings, and the team began searching for a replacement.

On the repair visit, the technician checked the standing pressures in the system. Both sides read 150 pounds per square inch, which was slightly low. He recovered the refrigerant from the system, then removed the old compressor and filter drier while flowing nitrogen through the lines. He brazed in a new filter drier and a new compressor, again with nitrogen flowing, which helps keep the inside of the copper clean while it is heated.

Before charging the system, he ran a pressure test. That test revealed a second problem: the condenser coil was leaking. Rather than charge a system that would lose refrigerant again, he stopped and called the office. The team agreed to pause the job until a replacement microchannel aluminum condenser coil could be located.

How we solved it

Our service manager researched the failed parts for availability and pricing. An estimate was sent to the customer by email and text message for approval. Once the customer approved the repair, the parts were ordered in a timely manner and the technician was scheduled to complete the work. The repair was a success.

Why repair was the right call

For this customer, repairing the existing unit was the most practical and fastest way to restore cooling. The equipment this unit protects is very important to the station, so getting the room cool again quickly was the priority.

A Saturday Morning No Cooling Call That Prevented the Next Breakdown

Before

On Saturday, August 8, a 91-year-old homeowner woke up with no cooling. The outdoor unit was not starting, and the inside of the house had climbed to 87 degrees.

After

A blown switch was replaced, an ant infestation inside the unit was cleaned out and treated, and wiring that was rubbing against copper tubing was secured. Cooling was restored.

The customer's situation

The homeowner's family searched online for an air conditioning company with strong reviews and found Air Care just six minutes away. They left their information, and our office let them know a technician would call back as soon as possible. While a family member was outside waiting for that call, our technician David pulled up to the gate. The wait was only about 15 minutes.

What our technician found

David listened to the family explain that the outdoor unit was not starting, then opened it up and found the issue quickly. The family had replaced a capacitor more than once over the years, so that was a natural suspect, but David checked it and confirmed the capacitor was fine. The real problem was a switch that had blown out.

When he removed the failed switch, he found an infestation of small black ants inside the unit. He cleaned the unit, installed the new switch, and treated the area with bug spray to knock out the ants.

Going beyond the original problem

While he was working, David noticed wiring lying against the copper refrigerant tubing. He removed the top screen and loosely zip tied the wires away from the pipes. The insulation on those wires was already showing a little wear. Left in place, the wires would have kept rubbing until they wore through the insulation and grounded out, causing a bigger problem later.

"It was a pleasure having him here and he went above and beyond. He could have just replaced the switch and been paid but he took care of things he saw to prevent further problems."

From the customer's review

Why this job stands out

Our service manager pointed to this job as a good example of what we expect on every call: check every part of the machine, not only the part that failed. A small worn wire is easy to miss. Catching it during a visit the family had already scheduled helped them avoid another breakdown down the road.

August Field Notes: New Installations and Repairs in Homosassa and Inverness

Not every job turns into a long story, but the work still adds up. Here is a look at what kept our technicians busy in August, along with photos from jobs in Homosassa and Inverness.

What we worked on most this month

  • Replaced several failed air conditioner capacitors. A capacitor gives the motors in your outdoor unit the boost they need to start. When one fails, the unit may hum without starting or stop running altogether.
  • Cleared multiple air conditioner drain lines. Your system pulls water out of the air as it cools, and that water needs a clear path to drain away.
  • Replaced and repaired multiple outdoor unit compressors. The compressor is the heart of the cooling system, and our team handled several repairs and replacements this month.
  • Diagnosed a system blowing warm air while set to cool for a homeowner in Homosassa.

Rainy weather in Citrus County

Heavy rain moved through the area during the month. Rainy, humid stretches mean your air conditioner pulls a lot of moisture out of the air, and all of that water has to go somewhere. If your system shuts off after a storm or you notice water near the indoor unit, our article on cooling recovery after afternoon storms explains what to look for.

A customer question we helped answer

One customer who had a new system installed was confused about the financing process. Our service manager brought in our financing team, and together they walked the customer through it and cleared everything up. The customer's home is cooling and the installation is paid for. If you have questions about paying for a new system, our financing page explains the options, and our office is happy to walk you through them.

Team news

One of our technicians recently sat for the Environmental Protection Agency certification exam, which is required to work with refrigerant. We are awaiting the results.
